New Regulation on Working with Computers: What Are Employers’ New Obligations?

As of July 2026, the new Rulebook on Occupational Safety and Health Measures for the Use of Display Screen Equipment has entered into force. It sets out more detailed obligations for employers with the aim of protecting employees who work with computers.

The Rulebook applies to employees who regularly use a computer as their primary work tool, regardless of the industry or business sector.

WHAT ARE THE EMPLOYER’S NEW OBLIGATIONS?

The employer is required to:

EYE EXAMINATIONS AND CORRECTIVE DEVICES

One of the most significant changes concerns the protection of employees’ eyesight. The employer must provide employees with an eye examination:

If a specialist examination determines that special corrective devices (such as computer glasses) are required for working with a computer, the employer is responsible for covering the cost of both the examination and the corrective devices.

HOW SHOULD THE WORKSTATION BE ARRANGED?

The Rulebook establishes minimum requirements for computer workstations.

These include, among other things, a properly positioned and adjustable monitor, a separate keyboard, a sufficiently spacious desk, an ergonomic chair adjustable in height and backrest angle, appropriate lighting without glare.

The Rulebook also sets requirements regarding noise levels, indoor climate conditions, and software ergonomics.

COMPLIANCE DEADLINE

Employers who were already using display screen equipment before the Rulebook entered into force have one year to bring their workstations and work organization into compliance with the new requirements.

Risk assessments, workplace condition assessments, and professional occupational safety and health services must be carried out by authorized persons or licensed occupational safety and health organizations.
