Extending a temporary residence and work permit can often feel stressful, but with proper preparation and timely submission of documentation, the process can be quick and straightforward.

WHEN TO SUBMIT THE APPLICATION?

The application for extension must be submitted:

• no later than one day before the current permit expires,
• no earlier than one month before expiration.

Tip: Do not wait until the last moment. Delays may result in losing the right to extend the permit.

DURATION OF THE NEW PERMIT

• The new permit is valid for one year.
• If your passport expires within the next year, the permit will be issued up to three months before passport expiration.

PROCESSING TIME

After submitting the complete documentation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) usually needs about 15 days to issue the new permit.

SPECIAL RULES FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

• Executive directors holding more than 51% of company capital may extend their permit four consecutive times after the first permit.
• After this period, they are eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit valid for five years.

This rule provides stability and long-term security for directors.

RULES FOR EMPLOYEES

• Employees who are not executive directors can extend their permit two consecutive times.
• After this period, they must take a break before submitting a new application.

OBLIGATIONS OF EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES

A permit cannot be extended if all tax obligations of the company and employees are not settled.
This is the most common reason for rejected applications.

WHAT IF YOU MISS THE DEADLINE?

If the application is not submitted on time:

• the right to extension is lost,
• a new application must be submitted with the full set of documentation, as if applying for the first time.
