Employment of foreigners based on a residence permit in Montenegro

• based on a residence permit for family reunification.

1. EMPLOYMENT BASED ON A WORK PERMIT

A work permit is issued on the basis of a job offer received from a Montenegrin company.

• Start of employment: from the date the residence permit is issued
• Duration of employment: until the residence permit expires
• Working hours: full-time (8 hours per day)

It is important for both the employer and the employee to keep track of the validity periods of the permit.

2. EMPLOYMENT BASED ON A FAMILY REUNIFICATION PERMIT

A foreign citizen who holds a residence permit on the basis of family reunification may start working one year after the issuance of their first residence permit.

• Working hours: full-time (8 hours per day) or part-time (2h, 4h, or 6h)
• Duration of employment: cannot exceed the validity period of the residence permit

3. EMPLOYMENT OF FOREIGNERS WITH RESIDENCE PERMITS BASED ON PROPERTY OWNERSHIP

Owning real estate in Montenegro enables obtaining a residence permit but does not grant the right to employment.
Therefore, foreigners with a residence permit issued on the basis of property ownership cannot use that permit to work.
